Sinaia has the largest ski area in the Prahova Valley: 25 slopes and 11 lifts between 1,000 and 2,100 m. Here is how it is laid out, which slopes suit whom, what it costs and how you get there in the morning, on foot, from our villa.
How the ski area is laid out
The ski area climbs in three steps. From the town (Cota 1000) the cable car and the gondola go up to Cota 1400, where the beginners' slopes and the first ski schools are. From Cota 1400 the cable car and the Carp gondola climb to Cota 2000, on the Bucegi plateau, where the largest and most beautiful part of the area spreads out: the wide, gentle slopes of Valea Dorului and Valea Soarelui, Lăptici and Panoramic, served by chairlifts and ski tows. Back towards Cota 1400, through the forest, run the more demanding slopes (Carp, Papagal, Târle, Furnica), and when there is snow lower down, Pârtia Nouă and Drumul de Vară take you from Cota 1400 all the way into town.

All the lifts work on a single card, One PASS. The cable car usually starts at 09:00 and the Carp gondola at 09:30, running until about 16:30–17:00 depending on the weather: at Cota 2000 the wind sometimes stops the upper lifts even when the town is sunny, so check the state of the slopes on sinaiago.ro in the morning.

Which slopes suit whom
Beginners stay at Cota 1400 and on the beginners' carpet at Furnica, next to the top station of the cable car; the resort's ski schools have instructors for children and adults, and equipment can be hired in town and at Cota 1400. Intermediate skiers have the longest runs on the plateau, with views towards Omu Peak and, on days with a temperature inversion, over a sea of clouds. Advanced skiers look for the forest slopes between Cota 2000 and Cota 1400, narrower and steeper, and ski them all in one day on the same card.
What it costs
Prices are published on sinaiago.ro and tickets are sold at the Cota 1000 and Cota 1400 ticket offices. Last season a one-day ski pass cost RON 210–230 for adults and RON 135–150 for children; there are also passes for a few hours or for several days. The season usually runs from December to March, sometimes into April on the plateau, where the snow lasts longest.
Practical tips
In the winter school holidays and at weekends in January and February the queue for the cable car is longest between 09:30 and 11:00: take the first ride or go up after lunch, and ski on weekdays if you can. On the plateau it is colder and windy: bring an extra layer and goggles with a low-light lens. In an emergency, Sinaia mountain rescue (Salvamont) answers on +40 725 826 668, or call 112.
Staying 10 minutes from the centre
Hublou Home is in the forest, on a quiet street, a 10-minute walk from the centre, where the cable car leaves from. In the morning you make the first ride without a car or parking, and in the evening you come back to silence, skis under your arm. The apartments have an equipped kitchenette (Apartment 1 has a full kitchen and a living room with a fireplace), a smart TV with Netflix and high-speed fibre-optic internet. Self check-in from 15:00, with the code sent on the day of arrival. Rates start from RON 250 a night, are dynamic and are shown exactly in the booking calendar. You book directly on the site, in the calendar; the booking is confirmed after you pay the proforma invoice, within 24 hours.
