A weekend in Sinaia is enough to see the castles, go up into the mountains and head home rested. Here is how I would split it, starting from our villa, a 10-minute walk from the centre.
Friday: the journey and the first evening
By train, the journey from Bucharest takes about an hour and a half. By car, on the DN1, traffic through the Prahova Valley resorts is heavy on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, so it pays to leave early. Check-in is self check-in from 15:00, so you can arrive in the evening too. The first evening is for a short walk around the centre and a good night’s sleep in the quiet of the forest.
Saturday: the castles and the old centre
- In the morning, Peleș Castle, the royal residence built between 1875 and 1883. Tickets are sold online for time slots, so book ahead. From Thursday to Sunday the castle is open 09:15–17:00; it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. From the centre it is about a 25-minute walk uphill.
- Next door is Pelișor Castle, smaller and more intimate, with the same hours.
- On the way down, Sinaia Monastery, founded in 1695 by Mihail Cantacuzino, with two churches and a museum.
- In the afternoon, Dimitrie Ghica Park and Casino Sinaia. The Casino is open daily 10:00–18:00, with guided tours every hour.
Sunday: into the mountains
After check-out, by 11:00, take the cable car up to Cota 1400 and then the gondola to Cota 2000, for views over the Bucegi and marked paths on the plateau. At Cota 1400 there is also the alpine coaster, a track of more than 2 km through the forest, open since December 2025. If the apartment is free, we can offer a free late check-out, so you don’t have to rush in the morning.
If the weather is not right for the mountains, choose the George Enescu National Museum – Vila Luminiș, the house the composer designed in the Cumpătu district, open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–17:00.
Good to know
- The cable car, gondola and alpine coaster hours change with the season and the weather; their daily status is published on sinaiago.ro.
- Bucegi Natural Park charges a visitor fee of RON 10, valid for 90 days; children up to 14 go free.
- It is colder in the mountains than in town. Take an extra layer, even in summer.
