Sinaia in winter: slopes, the cable car, castles and the quiet of the forest

What to do in Sinaia from December to March, with or without skis, and what our villa is like when it snows.

The chairlift up to the Bucegi plateau slopes in winter, Sinaia

In winter Sinaia changes: the boulevard fills with people carrying skis, the cable car climbs through the white forest and in the evening the resort goes quiet early. Here is what you can do from December to March, with or without skis, and what our villa is like when it snows.

The slopes: Cota 1400 and Cota 2000

The resort's ski area has 25 slopes, from the beginners' runs at Cota 1400 to the long ones on Valea Dorului and Valea Soarelui, served by 11 cable installations: the cable car from the centre to Cota 1400, the Carp gondola between Cota 1400 and Cota 2000, the Soarelui and Dorului chairlifts and the ski tows. One card, One PASS, works on all of them. The daily state of the slopes, the opening hours (the cable car usually starts at 09:00, the gondola at 09:30, running until about 16:30–17:00, weather permitting) and the prices are published on sinaiago.ro; last season a one-day ski pass cost RON 210–230 for adults and RON 135–150 for children. The season usually starts in December, once the snow holds at Cota 2000, and ends in March or April.

Equipment can be hired in the resort, and ski schools with instructors cover the first lessons. The lifts are busiest in the winter school holidays and at weekends in January and February: go up early in the morning or after lunch.

Without skis: castles, walks and the ice rink

You don't have to ski to enjoy Sinaia in winter. You can take the cable car and the gondola up to Cota 2000 just for the view of the snow-covered Bucegi. Peleș Castle and Pelișor Castle are open Wednesday to Sunday (Wednesday from 10:00, the other days from 09:15, until 17:00; last entry at 16:00), with tickets bought online for time slots. Peleș is closed from 2 November to 1 December 2026 for cleaning and conservation, and Pelișor until 3 November, so from December both are open again. Sinaia Monastery, founded in 1695, is a few minutes from the centre. The ice rink in Dimitrie Ghica Park opens when the weather allows, and Carol I Boulevard, with its lights, is a pleasant evening walk.

For a walk in the snow without special equipment, the forest road to Poiana Stânii starts next to Peleș and climbs gently through the woods. On the Bucegi plateau, in winter, go only in good weather, properly equipped and after checking the mountain-rescue warnings.

Getting here in winter

By train, Bucharest is about an hour and a half away; the station is in the centre of the resort. By car, on the DN1, winter tyres are compulsory on snow and ice, and on weekends with good snow the Prahova Valley traffic is heavy: leave early or, if you can, come on Thursday and leave on Monday. Parking at the villa is free, in the spaces in front of the property, subject to availability.
