A week in Sinaia: the town and its surroundings, day by day

Castles, mountains and trips to Bușteni, Brașov, Bran and Râșnov, in seven days.

The Hublou Home villa surrounded by trees in Sinaia

A week in Sinaia gives you time for the castles, the mountains and trips around the Prahova Valley and the Bârsa region, without rushing. Here is a seven-day plan you can adapt to the weather and to how you feel.

Day 1: Sinaia on foot

Settle in, then walk down to the centre, 10 minutes from the villa. Stroll through Dimitrie Ghica Park, laid out in 1881, and visit Casino Sinaia, open daily 10:00–18:00, with guided tours every hour.

Day 2: the castles and the monastery

Peleș and Pelișor castles are open Wednesday to Sunday (Wednesday from 10:00, other days from 09:15, until 17:00); they are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Tickets are sold online for time slots. On the way down, Sinaia Monastery, founded in 1695, with its museum.

Day 3: the mountains above Sinaia

Take the cable car to Cota 1400 and the gondola to Cota 2000. At Cota 1400 you can try the alpine coaster, a track of more than 2 km through the forest. If you would rather walk, Bucegi Natural Park has marked theme trails: for example Vulpărie – Royal Path – Poiana Stânii – Cota 1400, 6.2 km in about two and a half hours, or Piatra Arsă hut – Babele hut, 7.6 km in about two hours, both easy to moderate.

Day 4: Bușteni

Bușteni is about 8 km away. Cantacuzino Castle, built between 1901 and 1911, opens daily from 10:00. The trail to Urlătoarea Waterfall is 3.4 km, about an hour and a half. For the plateau, the Bușteni – Babele cable car goes up to the Babele and the Sphinx rock formations, but it stops on Tuesdays for technical inspection.

Day 5: Brașov

Brașov is about an hour’s drive without traffic. Piața Sfatului, the Black Church, with shorter winter hours (from 16 October: Tuesday–Saturday 10:00–18:00, Sunday and Monday 12:00–18:00), and the cable car up Tâmpa for the view.

Day 6: Bran and Râșnov

Bran Castle, about an hour from Sinaia, is open daily (Mondays from 12:00). On the way, Râșnov: Dino Parc, with 125 life-size dinosaurs, and the fortress, where for now only the outer courtyard and viewpoints can be visited.

Day 7: a quiet day

The George Enescu National Museum – Vila Luminiș in the Cumpătu district (Tuesday–Sunday, 10:00–17:00), a walk in the forest and an afternoon in the garden or the gazebo. If you still feel like a drive, the Rhein cellars in Azuga, founded in 1892, offer visits with tastings, and Ialomița Cave and Lake Bolboci are about an hour away on the Transbucegi road, which can close in winter when it snows.
